Japan's 2000 PC Shipments Break 10M Mark: JEITA
February 6, 2001 (TOKYO) -- Japan's PC shipments in 2000, excluding exports, reached a record high of 11.55 million units, a 25 percent increase from 1999, the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA) said Feb. 5.
In value, the shipments within Japan also increased to a record high of 2,105 billion yen (about US$18.2 billion at 115.30 yen = US$1).
This is the first time the shipments went over the 10-million mark in units and the 2-trillion-yen mark in value, a JEITA official said.
JEITA expects PC shipments for next year to be about 12 million units due to brisk sales in the consumer market.
JEITA also announced Japan's PC shipments for the third quarter of 2000 (October-December). Japan's domestic shipments for the Oct.-Dec. 2000 period increased by 15 percent from the same period in 1999 to 2,778,000 units. The number is the highest among quarterly records for the third quarter of every year.
The percentage of portable PCs to total for the third quarter is 50 percent at 5,767,000 units, compared to 47 percent in the same period in 1999. The popularity of portable PCs is notable, said the official, due to improved performance comparable to that of desktop PCs, decreased unit price, and other factors. The unit price of a portable PC on average decreased by about 11 percent to 188,000 yen from 211,000 yen for the second quarter of 2000. On the other hand, the unit price of a desktop PC/server didn't change much, from 163,000 yen for the second quarter to 162,000 yen for the third.
JEITA collected information from 17 PC makers, representing 90 percent of the Japanese market.
