0.13 micron process technology...

So if the buzz around the net is true, then Intel is going to have 0.13 micron parts out the door and into customer's hands around the middle of the year. This puts them at least 4 to 6 months ahead of AMD to 0.13 micron. So looking at Intel's press release:

As with 0.18 micron, the physical gate length is much narrower than the "process number." Intel and AMD use a ~100nm (0.10 micron) gate on their 0.18 micron process, Intel is moving to 70nm (0.07 micron) for their 0.13 micron process. They're also using an exceptionally thin gate oxide at 1.5nm (I don't know if that is the physical or electrical thickness... anyone have any more info?). Intel has also made the shift to copper interconnect...

Intel isn't, however, using SOI. I'll have to dig up the article, but I seem to remember one of the development higherups saying Intel saw no benefit to using SOI at this point. AMD, MOT, and IBM are all big proponents of SOI... although it looks like their 0.13 micron is going to be coming out later than Intel's... and will never be in the volume Intel produces... could this be a case of Intel sacrificing a few percent performance for easier scalability, or is there really no benefit when SOI is coupled with Intel's process???
