I can only tell you what I see and I have seen Cisco - as a matter of course - stay out of the manufacturing and component businesses. My sense is that eventually these components become commodities and so the value add in owning such a business to the underlying systems business isn't that great. I don't think a company has to be vertically integrated down to the components in order to succeed. And in some cases this could be a detriment since it limits second sourcing and perhaps limits best of breed purchasing. Bottom line - Cisco appears to be an equipment company - not a component company.

As for the JDSU/SDLI merger... I'm actually a little surprised the FTC approved it.
