. . SI may not be around for too long

It would be tragic if InfoSpace were to pull the plug on SI. I've been there done that [I did the marketing for Viewtron, the predecessor to AOL] and it is like losing a loved one, when such a thing happens. It has been 15 years since they pulled Viewtron's plug and I still miss it. . . and they still hold annual Viewtron reunion banquets down in Miami, where Knight-Ridder headquarters used to be. That is how much impact these communities have on the lives of the members!

The paragraph that was most disturbing from today's Seattle Times regarding the 250 layoffs at InfoSpace was this one:

Hansen said that Go2Net's consumer assets such as MetaCrawler would remain part of the business but that those products would now be licensed to businesses rather than self-operated for consumers.

Co-branding and Affiliate Programs are the current wave. So it appears that we could see dozens of private label message boards constructed using InfoSpace's SI Perl-based messaging program on Financial Sites across the net. "Coming to a brokerage house near you."

I knew there would be fallout from the tech market drop on message board communities.. . which is one of the reasons Insighters.com is opening this year rather than last year. . . . . . but I didn't think that the drop would result in so many drastic measures by the leading communities. The Street.com went to a free system in a last ditch effort to save the company. Raging Bull was sold, moved and essentially placed into an "automatic" mode. Just try writing to someone there. Nobody is home. And now it appears that Silicon Investor will "be licensed to businesses rather than self-operated for consumers. "

I wish Bob, and all other SI employees who were given pink slips today, the very best wishes.

we could wake up tomorrow and find our SI's repossessed.

Shootie, that would be a dreadfully sad day for us all.
