Hong Kong - Datacraft Asia, the region's leading network systems integrator and e-business enabler, has won contracts from Eastern Broadband Telecommunications (EBT) to build an advanced multi-service IP backbone network across Taiwan. EBT is the first private carrier in Taiwan to be awarded a fixed network operation license following the government's liberalisation of the island's telecommunications market.
Based around high-end routers and switches from Cisco Systems, the EBT backbone network will enable the company to roll out a series of value-added business services including virtual private networks, IP telephony, unified messaging and outsourced application hosting.
"The commercial landscape of Taiwanese telecommunications is changing rapidly," said Benjamin Wang, general manager of Datacraft Taiwan. "To succeed, new market entrants have to quickly establish innovative, high value-added services that can attract a loyal customer following.
"By embracing a backbone network architecture that makes it easy to increase bandwidth and is smart enough to manage different types of traffic – such as email, Web, voice or streaming video – Eastern Broadband has the platform on which to build wave after wave of new and enhanced services, " Wang added.
The new EBT island-wide backbone network has points of presence (POPs) in major Taiwanese cities linked by a mesh of fibre-optic cables. By employing an advanced technology known as Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS), EBT's backbone network will deliver the quality of service required to support real-time voice and video as well as service level agreements that guarantee bandwidth to customers.
"Datacraft's strong track record of building and supporting large-scale telecommunication networks in Taiwan and elsewhere, together with Cisco's advanced technology, has given us a significant advantage in the marketplace," said Dr James C. Jeng, Executive Vice President of Eastern Broadband Telecommunications Co Ltd.
"We are confident of being the first new fixed line operator to launch an island-wide multi-service network and look forward to setting a benchmark for high-quality service by which our competitors will be judged."
Implementation of MPLS across the EBT network will enable the carrier to provide services that more cost-effectively meet the requirements of corporate customers than traditional leased line, frame relay and ATM networks. For example, MPLS enables EBT to offer virtual private networks that match customers' internal quality-of-service standards while enjoying the cost benefits of backbone infrastructure that is shared with non-premium services.
The EBT regional and local network is built upon TRA's (Taiwan Railway Administration) 48-core fiber-optical cable backbone, which connects all EBT local rings and backbone links and TRA's 259 railway stations island-wide into a single comprehensive telecom network. The consolidated network places EBT as the first and largest player in the fixed line market and enables it to dominate the major voice and data markets through rapid expansion.
The EBT network's major POPs in urban centres will be built around redundant pairs of Cisco 120012 Gigabit Switch Routers while the smaller POPs in rural areas will deploy Cisco 7505 routers. These will be connected through multiple155Mbps SDH/STM-1 optical links ensuring a very high level of fault tolerance and redundancy across the network. The integration of EBT's local CATV/ HFC networks and local rings is also key in helping EBT build a widespread and highly reliable broadband network.
