IMT-2000 license winners project profits in 2005

The two license winners for the third-generation mobile telecom service have projected that their operations will be in the black by 2005, the Financial Supervisory Service said yesterday citing their business plans.

On Monday, the two consortia submitted their business plans to the financial watchdog in a bid to inform investors of their services. The forecasts were based on their plan to commercialize the next-generation mobile services in May next year.

The Korea Telecom consortium estimated that its net loss is likely to be 472.9 billion won ($375 million) next year, 390.5 billion won ($310 million) in 2003 and 148.1 billion won in 2004.

In 2005, the consortium forecast its profits will reach 395.6 billion won ($314 million).

The SK consortium said its mobile telecommunication service will lose 115.3 billion won ($91 million) this year, 319.7 billion won ($254 million) in 2002, 341.3 billion won ($271 million) in 2003 and 152.9 billion won ($121 million) in 2004.

The consortium projected it will have net profits of 178.8 billion won ($142 million) in 2005.

Both consortia added that they will be unable to turn a profit by 2005 if the commercialization of 3G services is delayed.

The two consortia were chosen to provide asynchronous-mode IMT-2000 mobile services on Dec. 15 last year. A license for synchronous-mode service will be awarded by mid-March.
