Hi jim kelley; Last fall, Micron stated that they make a profit on 64Mbit memory chips at $4 each. There are 8 64Mbit chips on a 64MB DIMM. That's $32 per DIMM, but their costs are constantly dropping as their process improves, so who knows what their cost is now. The lowest quoted price for 64MB DDR DIMM sticks is $43. That leaves them with plenty of margin for assembly and profit. Clearly, Micron is making sure that DDR is available, rather than trying to make huge profits on it. If they thought it was going to be stuck as a niche memory forever (like RDRAM), they'd be charging RDRAM type prices for it, but they're not.

By the way, you only get in trouble for dumping when you sell stuff in other countries for less than the cost of production. Micron is a US company, they can't "dump" in the US.
