From studies on newborns (recognition of reflection studies). They are not aware of themselves either. I don't advocate infanticide because the boundary in which they do become aware is poorly defined and varies. It is on the order of a year or two old. I do maintain that abortion until the time of birth (9 month gestation) is comfortably within the span that the organism is unaware. Birth is a nice, well defined event to define the legal version of who is a person.

Not that I like abortion. As I have said, I have some ethical qualms about killing cows, but I still eat beef. I have qualms about abortion, but it is a tradeoff and does not end a self aware beings life.
