in win2000pro (which i am currently using) there's a 'folder options' setting in control panel that allows for either single-click or double click to open an item.

if you're running win98, there is probably a similar setting. i just can't think of it off the top.

[edit: okay, i booted into w98se. here's the clickstream.... start\settings\folder options\general tab\settings button

in the custom settings dialog you'll find the single-click or double-click option. ]
