Interesting article. My answer to the "Who's Next" is: we all are.

This is OT, but fits with the a previous post's mention of the issues or fallout those of us in the north might face as a result of the California crisis. Here's the worst-case doomsday scenario I see resulting from the shortages in CA:

(1)winter "drawdowns" of reservoir levels are taken in Idaho so that the resulting hydro-generation might alleviate some power shortages in CA (ongoing)

(2) one particular cold-water reservoir spends 1MAF of reserve (which would otherwise be available for flow augmentation in the summer) (ongoing)

(3) low snow pack levels are worse than those of the drought in 1977, the lowest level since the State has officially been measuring such things (currently true)

(4) there is not enough water for farm irrigation during a dry Idaho summer

(5) there is no water available to aid salmon; flow augmentation is attempted through warm water Snake River reservoirs, with only 350kAF being available b/c of the low snow pack

(6) fish die

(7) tourism dollars and outfitters die

(8) small farms die (a rash of farm bankruptcies strike post-harvest)

(9) regional and local banking operations suffer b/c of the rash of uncollectable farm loans

(10) commodity prices increase

(11) additional pressure is put on the economy b/c of pre-existing recessionary issues

(12) there are really tough times in Idaho, leaving the state economy depressed for much longer than other states

What was my point again? Oh yeah, California is going to make your potatoes cost more.

Sorry about the rant, but the utility crisis discussion makes me want to rant. Perhaps I should find the anti-deregulation thread for this post.
