Sony Brings Industry-Leading, All-In-One CD-RW/DVD-ROM Capabilities to New VAIO FX Notebook Line
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 7, 2001--Sony Electronics is bringing the powerful entertainment and storage capabilities of CD-RW and DVD-ROM to its VAIO notebook PC line.
"While others are talking about it, we're making it happen," said Mark Hanson, Sony Electronics' vice president and general manager for VAIO PC products. "The introduction of CD-RW/DVD-ROM capabilities in a single, versatile drive gives multimedia oriented executives and digital video enthusiasts alike the opportunity to create and rewrite CDs, watch DVD movies and utilize their PCs to their ultimate capacity."
Sony's new combination drive is featured on four FX models. The PCG-FX190 and the PCG-FX170 feature a Windows Me operating system, while the PCG-FX190K and the PCG-FX170K offer the Windows 2000 operating system.
VAIO's 3MAX+ Technology
Included in the entire FX series is Sony's 3MAX+(TM) notebook system, offering consumers increased screen size, maximum battery capacity and maximum mobility in a notebook PC.
-- Six FX models feature an impressive 15-inch active matrix TFT
screen -- large enough to use in group presentations without
the need for a projector.
-- Battery capacity is optimized via the FX line's diskette drive
bay, which can be swapped out for an optional second battery.
This second battery is great for viewing full-length films on
DVD or ensuring multi-media presentations are properly
supported.
-- And the fact that all the systems have built-in drives
eliminates the need for external drives across the board.
PCG-FX190: Blockbuster Capabilities Across the Board
The star of the VAIO FX show is the top-of-the-line PCG-FX190, which gives consumers a powerful combination of features in an all-in-one desktop replacement with built-in Ethernet port; a 30 GB(1) hard drive; 128 MB of SD-RAM (expandable to 512 MB); built-in CD-RW/DVD and diskette drives; and the fastest mobile processor on the market -- Intel's 850 MHz(2) Pentium(R) III processor with SpeedStep(TM) technology.
Contributing to the "wow factor" of this notebook PC is its impressive, 15-inch SXGA+ TFT screen, which shows incredible attention to detail and an 87 percent higher pixel count than a regular XGA TFT screen that makes DVD playback as brilliant as a living postcard.
Designed for PC enthusiasts with a penchant for multimedia features and large, crisp displays, the PCG-FX190 is loaded with a healthy complement of business and digital video editing software.
Included in the FX line's software mix are Sony's MovieShaker(TM) software, a simple application for producing digital home movies, and Sony's PictureGear(TM) software, designed to help manage such digital content as panoramic photography. The FX series also includes Sony's DVgate(TM) software, yet another tool to maximize a user's creativity. DVgate helps capture full motion digital video and still photography for impressive multimedia presentations - or video e-mail.
The PCG-FX190 is powered by a high-capacity lithium-ion battery with dual battery capability, making it ideal to watch DVDs while on the road(3). It is about two inches thin and weighs just over seven pounds.
The PCG-FX 190 ships with a Windows Millennium operating system for about $3,600(4). Its Windows 2000 counterpart, the PCG-FX190K, ships for about $3,700. Both systems arrive on store shelves this month.
Integrated Modem, Ethernet and i.LINK Capabilities
The entire FX product line is equipped with integrated Ethernet ports for rapid network connectivity to office networks, broadband for the home and college campuses. And to facilitate the quick information exchange among Sony Digital Handycam(R) camcorders, Sony Cyber-shot(R) digital still cameras and other compatible devices, all VAIO notebooks come equipped with Sony's i.LINK(5) (IEEE 1394) digital interface.
Breaking Wireless Entry Barriers
Sony is currently offering a free wireless modem(6) that enables new VAIO notebook owners to access business-critical information, browse Web sites, read and send e-mail, obtain stock quotes and check movie listings on their notebook PCs from just about anywhere in the U.S.
"Offering VAIO customers a free wireless modem -- an up to $480 value -- helps eliminate the economic barrier of entry for wireless access to consumers across the board," noted Hanson.
