Colored Palm V
Hi Ad,
I agree with you, 8MB is too small. The color screen will require a display buffer that's 3 times as large as before, and colored content takes a lot more space. For a colored device, multimedia should be one of the key applications, such as viewing color images, so this model should have at least 16MB of RAM if it wants to be comparable to the 8MB mono Palm V. (Didn't someone say that the current OS maxes out at 8MB?)
A more important question, in my opinion, is how does the OS treat the SD storage? Is it addressable by any application? Can any application be launched off of it? What other expansion devices are planned for this slot?
I am still worried about battery life. If the m505 dies too fast, it would not fair better than any CE devices out there in this market.
Also, does the colored device give the user the option to choose "black-and-white" to save power?
----------I love the 3.25 oz. weight size & expansion slot, but am concerned about the 8 MB issue. -------------This is the same as current Palm Vx models. I would appreciate anybody's view on, assuming -------------the specs are true, if this product would move the stock.
It's been difficult to figure out this market and this stock, but I agree with most of the Sound View report that the current quarter is the toughest quarter for Palm. New hardware are coming off of the assembly line next quarter. Supplies are getting handy. (I hope the new battery has good supply.) More profitable is a software product that Palm Inc. can sell to current Palm users. I am talking about an OS upgrade with a whole new batch of applications. If Palm can package this in a nice $50 box, it would sell like hot potatoes, and the profit margin will move up instantly. Sure, this is just a guess, but I look for the company to get very creative to make money from the current 10 million user base.
So what am I say?
The m505 may move the stock and it may not move the stock, but it's just the first of a whole new batch of products coming out of Palm. Following it will be new hardware/software/services. As a result, bottom line growth will be significantly enhanced.
I have a large position in Palm, and I am looking to purchase some OTM May Calls on Palm just to add leverage. Hell! I can probably get May $30 Calls for $2, I would not be surprised if PALM moves to that level by the next conference call, which is only 5 weeks away.
Come on guys, lighten up!
