The other factor is cost. Don't forget why IDE beat SCSI and ESDI. The fact that there were significantly less electronics required on the drive itself made IDE cheaper to implement. Both SCSI and ESDI required significant electronics on the drive. They also required less expensive electronics for the controller.

What this means in terms of flash may have different implications. The article I saw a link posted to here from USNEWS claimed that flash without internal electronics to read the flash was at a disadvantage. The argument was because it is an external device, the requirement to purchase expensive electronics for each attachment gave some flash formats a disadvantage.

What does this mean here?
