Good going, haqi. "Patriot" did, indeed, refer to supporters of independence, but the groups I was thinking of were called the Committees of Correspondence, that spread news and opinion encouraging and supporting rebellion.

John Jay was the first Chief Justice of the United States.

Jefferson founded the University of Virginia.
