Did anybody see the Associated Press article by Lynn Brezosky?? I saw it in two major newspapers (the Scottsdale, AZ paper and the Cleveland, OH paper on Jan 25th and Jan 28, 2001 respectively). (Don't know if AP is available on-line). The article is about dental gums (found in the toothepaste aisle), mentioning Trident, Aquafresh, and Arm & Hammer as having products -- and it mentions that in 2000, retail sales for Arm & Hammer's Dental Care gum was "about $100 million, more than double a year earlier." It says "Arm & Hammer and GlaxoSmithKline Beecham, both big toothpaste makers, are also in the dental gum market and some supermarket and drugstore chains have their own store brands." The gist of the article is that this is a big growth area for the otherwise-low-growth gum producers. Some question the efficacy of the gum, but it's selling and getting bigger.

My guess is that it's just a matter of time before P&G weighs in with a Crest dental gum made by GUMM. (we know GUMM and P&G are working together -- see the press release dated 12/1/00: biz.yahoo.com
