Let's make a deal. I'll offer you $1 this year, and up the payment by 50% each of the next ten years, at which point the payment will start increasing 10% a year. I'm asking you to pay me $50 today for the privilege.

Would you take it? I'd hope so. Consider this: ignoring inflation, you'd get $115 in the next ten years, and then over $38 per year thereafter.

Assuming a 15% discount rate, that deal's present value is $229.
