Some free-space infra red systems using line-of-sight technollogy, which are usually mounted on rooftops or behind windows, use LEDs as a light source. More powerful ones use lasers.

Future fiber to the home platforms may, too, although there appear to be more suitable alternatives now to the simple LED, such as the vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) in various forms of WDM/CWDM configurations.
