10:51 07-FEB-2001 Lehman Brothers says China foreign investment to grow 50 pct this year

Paul Sheard, chief economist (Asia) and managing director of Lehman Brothers, said that mainland financial institutions should be able to restructure smoothly during the country's accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO). China's WTO entry could increase the chance for Chinese enterprises to enter the international market and bring in more foreign investment.

Lehman Brothers predicts China foreign investment to rise 50 pct year-on-year to US$40 billion this year.

Mr Sheard said Hong Kong internal consumption has risen this year but that could not offset the effect of an export slowdown. However, exports to the mainland will increase when China becomes a WTO member.
