I had about a year's experience with new applications making server decisions, say 2 years ago. At the time, Web software was immature and new/upgraded versions were ported to Solaris first. Considering the speed the Web came "online", this was a big deal to the app developers. Regardless of the very premium price, they wanted Sun servers and came up with some extremely creative ways to get them. Extremely!

That was then. Price is now an issue. Storage, IMHO, is now the primary target of IT funds. DownSouth, on the SI NTAP thread, has articulated the movement to adding storage in lieu of adding servers. This trend is poised to accelerate, IMHO.
