The article you provided the link to deals with the ease of third party monitoring of a radio signal, but certainly does not cover all the methods of connecting appliances, particularly the Wireless Local Loop (WLL) using the CDMA system. A WLL would be quite difficult to tap, as the coding of the data changes all the time.

Security of a transmitted signal is different from security in a transaction involving, say, credit card numbers or unique user ID. This, as far as I can tell, is the part of the security problem addressed by the secure digital card.
