Signs that the new NM/BMG combination will cut back production:

"Wayne Murdy, president and chief executive (Newmont), said the firm was upbeat about market conditions despite the prevailing pessimism, focusing his comments on declining mine supply. He would dearly like to squeeze supplies dramatically, a view echoed by Anglogold recently which called on producers to close ailing mines. Murdy noted that as a combined unit Newmont will produce 400,000 ounces less than it and BMG did separately."
