[ATNGF] New genes may help fight diabetes, obesity

Thursday 8 February 2001

Medical research company Autogen reported yesterday it had discovered five genes associated with obesity and diabetes.

Autogen said it believed the genes - discovered at the company's Deakin University facilities in Geelong - might help develop treatments, and that it had applied for patents.

The discoveries follow the company's Beacon and Tanis genediscoveries, also for obesity and diabetes, announced last October.

Autogen formed a strategic alliance with German company Lipha, a wholly owned subsidiary of Merck KGaA, in January 1998, giving Lipha exclusive rights to develop and market any drugs resulting from the research.

The company received three million French francs (then $A737,000) from Lipha for the Beacon and Tanis genes. But Autogen chief scientific office Greg Collier said it would be at least a year before the company took royalties from Lipha for the new gene targets.

"These targets are not at the stage where we will see a milestone royalty," he said.

"The milestones for each of these targets vary between three million French francs ($A775,080) and 20 million French francs, depending on what stage of development the programs are at."

The company now had a high throughput gene discovery technology, he said. Autogen shares rose six cents to $1.06.
