NARAD NETWORKS RAISES $41 MILLION FOR ITS HFC “VIRTUAL FIBER” PLATFORM

[FAC: I figured that it was only a matter of time before Robert Metcalfe re-entered the scene in a big way, pushing his Ethernet to the home. I guess he figures the 'Net is safe now. But Bob, Virtual Fiber? This is a clip I picked up on ConvergeDigest. I also added some of the Narad web site information below.

This one is going to raise a lot of eyebrows. And maybe, just maybe, provide some much needed solutions along the way before it is too late. Now who's sounding like doomsday? _g_

What more can you ask for in a platform? You have the "father" of the cable modem (Rouzbeh Yassini) and the "father" of Ethernet (Robert Metcalfe) both pulling bits on the same team ;)

Anyway, it lends a ton of credence to what we've been pounding the table about: HFC is going to need a lot of help. But why bother with virtual, when the real thing is just begging, while getting less expensive every day, to be installed?]

NARAD NETWORKS RAISES $41 MILLION FOR ITS HFC “VIRTUAL FIBER” PLATFORM

Narad Networks, a start-up based in Westford, Mass., raised $41.6 million in its first round of private financing, led by Polaris Venture Partners and including network industry luminaries.

Narad Networks is developing a “Virtual Fiber” access platform and service-enabling environment that would enable demand-driven IP services over existing HFC networks. Product plans have not been disclosed.

Some prominent names investing in Narad Networks include: Pradeep Sindhu, vice chairman and CTO, Juniper Networks; Rubin Gruber and Hassan Ahmed, chairman and president, respectively, of Sonus Networks; John Fan, president, CEO and founder of Kopin; Bob Metcalfe, founder of 3Com; and YAS Broadband Ventures, L.L.C. formed by Rouzbeh Yassini, the "father" of the cable modem.

Dev Gupta is the founder, President and CEO of Narad Networks. Prior to starting Narad, he was the founder of MaxComm Technologies and Dagaz Technologies, which were both purchased by Cisco Systems. Previously, he held positions at Cisco and Bell Labs. Several overall members of the Narad management team left MaxComm/Cisco to start the company.

From the Narad web site:

Vision

Unconstrained managed
[fac: wait a minute, isn't that an oxymoron?] bandwidth everywhere will accelerate the creation and integration of next-generation IP services.

Narad Networks believes that the future of broadband communications lies in the ability of service providers to offer demand-driven services that are not only defined by their customers but are delivered in real-time. However, in order to realize this vision, next generation broadband networks need to be built that offer unconstrained, managed bandwidth over a variety of physical media such as fiber, copper, wireless, and HFC. These networks will be Ethernet-based and will deliver IP Services over high-bandwidth connections that offer advanced Quality of Service (QoS), increased network security, high availability, and self provisioning. Using advanced service enabling software, customers will be able to instantly create and provision services on demand based on their own preferences and service providers will become more competitive as a result.

Narad is supercharging today's cable access networks to deliver unconstrained bandwidth over Virtual Fiber™ networks by accelerating the delivery of broadband IP services and giving cable network operators new opportunities to market and support next-generation, demand-driven, high-margin services. Narad Networks solutions — next generation broadband access technology and a service-enabling environment — deliver effectively unlimited bandwidth so that it becomes a non-issue. The result is cable networks that are faster, more manageable, cost-effective and better equipped to deliver premium IP services.

Narad Networks turns last mile bottlenecks into first mile solutions™

Meaning of Narad

Narad is the name of a mythical sage who was the prototype of today's "networked person." Narad carried the spoken word from place to place, brokered deals, made peace, told tales and embodied the power of communication.

By realizing the potential and promoting the power of human communication, Narad Networks is bringing the power of this spirit into today's world. Through delivering effectively unlimited bandwidth over the most pervasive delivery medium, cable access networks, Narad Networks allows business customers to communicate on their terms — by providing them with the ability to define and choose the services they want.
