Market Commentary on 12/29/00 <http://www.firsthandfunds.com/news/2000-12-29_market_commentary.html>
Excerpt: The demand for high capacity, high-speed Internet connections continues to grow. The bottleneck here is in the metro market and the home market, both of which are price and cost sensitive. Long-haul infrastructure has been put in place across the country, but the race to see who will provide the solution to bridge the "last mile" is in the first leg. Digging up streets and laying fiber underneath city blocks remains an expensive, time-consuming proposition. Thus, we believe the solution lies in the fixed wireless area. This relatively cost effective solution will allow entire buildings to become "wired" in a manner of weeks.

DMC Stratex Networks, Inc. (STXN) formerly Digital Microwave Corporation (DMIC), provides digital microwave radios for use in wireless communications networks. The company's customers include wireless telephone service providers and network equipment manufacturers, including BellSouth PCS, Winstar, Nortel, Motorola, and Siemens. The wireless communications industry is more than just cellular phones. It now includes companies, such as Winstar and Teligent, which provide wireless access to high-speed data networks. In the future, wireless technologies will be used to deploy basic communications infrastructure in developing nations such as China and India. As one of the emerging leaders in providing microwave radios, we believe that DMC Stratex Networks has tremendous potential for growth. |
