I guess the rule is to increase sales and deplete gold mining resources into the face of declining prices, all while hedging. A recipe for disaster.

If the estimates of gold consumption are correct, that demand greatly exceeds production, a reduction of gold mining, similar to what the oil cartel does, would make more sense to me.
