As I code I write the results along with new ideas in a notebook. I assign numbers to every idea I think is worth coding. I don’t always code but later when I have a similar idea I will write it down again because there’s often a slight difference.

Some ideas come up over and over and these always end up as code. When they don’t give me an edge I think about what’s wrong and of course about what’s right. Eventually I fall back on an old idea that never worked and by combining it with the current code both are improved. I shoot for minimum functionality at first so I don’t get bogged down and never start.

”there are only so many combinations and permutations”

I’ve always felt the same but seeing it in print has been helpful and made me think about it more. I’ve had an idea forever that I’ve never applied in a way which gives me an edge. For a few days I’ve been thinking even as I was writing code that I would soon revisit that old idea and merge it into the current code. While the concept’s simple and the math is simple I couldn’t remember the math but there it was in my notebook so I moved on to thinking about how to merge it with my latest failure.

I’ve worked it out and written it down and it makes sense. It converts what was a + or – signal to a more precise signal. For instance a sum of –1 with +1 = neutral won’t be likely to be zero anymore since I’ve added 2 decimals. And since I’m familiar with the failings of this method I know how to avoid them when I merge the code and that adds more precision which equals more opportunities to work with the signals and especially their derivatives which is where lost precision really hurts.

Long story but – if you have an edge and give it away then you longer have that edge. If you write a book and excuse me if I’m mistaken but I thought that’s where you were going in your contribution to the TA community message – anyway if you do write then write about your process rather than giving us another speed indicator because any edge given away becomes lost in the efficient market theory or whatever causes it’s value to dissipate.

That said -- I would love to read a trading manual by you and hope you write one. I know it would be a success.

Best Regards,
Mechanical Method
