I agree there's an opportunity for slimmed down software.

The only reason 486 machines seem inadequate is because the newest
software (MS is the worst at this) is so bloated and kludgy that hard drives are filled up quickly and load times are long.

Some company (Corel, hopefully) is going to do very well by seizing
the opportunity to aggressively market "Lite" and fast-opening
word processors and office suites that do 110 percent of what 95
percent of us need on a day to day basis.

Recently, I visited two friends with Microsoft Works on their machines. One was a circa 1993 IBM 486DX-33 with an 1992-93
version of Works and the other was a Pentium 120 with the Windows 95 version of Works.

The Win 95 version of Works was thoroughly confusing and made more so by helpful "Wizards" popping up with answers I wasn't seeking. I was trying to test the fax modem, but it took me 5 minutes just to get
a blank screen on which to type a test document. I don't know what
kind of consumer testing MS does, but something is really warped.

If anyone is positioned to bring "lite" versions to market, it is Corel who still continues to make DOS versions of WordPerfect and
Quatro Pro. Maybe their Java suite will become the "killer app."
if they can just get it to run fast.

Speaking of "lite", I am waiting to see if Windows CE will be ported
to the X86 environment. This would also bring new life to older
machines.
