FRONT OFFICE GORILLA GAME UPDATE

In the most recent Front Office report I wrote the following:

"In the [Siebel Systems conference] call, [Tom] Siebel said he had heard that a top person at Clarify had left the company and that the Clarify sales force had been rolled into Nortel's switch sales force." (For complete context, see://www.siliconinvestor.com/readmsg.aspx?msgid=15235343)

We got a response to that in the Fool's GG thread (I think from a Nortel employee) stating that Clarify's sales force had NOT been rolled into the switch sales force. It has taken about ten days since then, but I finally was able to speak with an authority from Nortel about it. Anne Ward, secretary to the head of sales of Nortel's e-business division, has also heard from others about what Tom Siebel said. She explained that Clarify's sales force remains dedicated to selling Nortel's e-business software. She also confirmed that Tony Zangalli (sp?) has indeed left the company but is currently a consultant to the company on a part-time basis.

That information changes the perspective of other comments I wrote in that Front Office report: "What does this mean for the Gorilla? One of its three largest competitors by virtually anyone's definition no longer has a sales force dedicated to selling front office products (Vantive and Oracle being the other two). That, no doubt, is the reason Siebel summed up the whole matter by saying, 'For all intents and purposes they are about to disappear.' "

Based on the information I have, it's a gross overstatement for Tom Siebel to say that Clarify is about to disappear. He's a fabulous business manager, but I sure do wish he'd lose the resemblance he has with Larry Ellison of spending too much time talking about the competition.
