Sudan: Worth exploiting - Gulf News, February 5

Sudan is looking for ways to exploit its vast natural resources. It is a country of many parts: to the north, a region that can grow some of the finest wheat available anywhere. So fine, that the American government used to pay Sudan not to grow wheat as it would affect its own industry.

Now that "inducement" has been spurned by the Sudanese, keen to see the country grow through its own abilities. And there are many. For many years it has been a major exporter of cattle to the Arab countries; it now exports oil and even gold, other mineral resources have not yet been sought. The fertile central and southern regions offer vast potential for development.

But, with its recent history of internal strife it will need assistance in the construction of a modern industry and infrastructure. The country needs to leap forward to benefit its citizens. It can also act as a conduit, through Port Sudan, to its inland neighbours.

For this reason the visit to the UAE of Sudan's Minister of Industry and Investment is important and one emirates entrepreneurs should not overlook. Any improvement in Arab-African relations will help stability in Sudan and improve the business climate.
