Dr King speaks about liberals optimism under the article, "Pilgrimage to Nonviolence."

He says, "I also came to see that liberalism's superficial optimism concerning human nature
caused it to overlook the fact that reason is darkened by sin. The more I thought about
human nature the more I saw how our tragic inclination for sin causes us to use
our minds to rationalize our actions. Liberalism failed to see that reason by itself is little
more than an instrument to justify man's defensive ways of thinking."...........

When he talks about how we use our minds to rationalize our actions, I thought of Hamlet
and Othello.

Since I cannot type the entire article, you'll have to look it up. I'm sure it is on the Internet.
I want to point out that Dr. King also rejects neo-orthodoxy because he thought it was too pessimistic.

Since this is all taken out of context, I doubt that any of it makes sense, and I probably
shouldn't have brought it up in the first place. (ggg)

If I create confusion, I apologize.

I am not familiar with Dr. King's articles and speeches, I bought a book that contained his essential
writings over the last 10 days or so, but I am impressed with his depth of thought. He was
wise beyond his years.
