Happy Valentine's day..now here's a way to celebrate.
IDAHO ZOO'S VALENTINES DAY FEATURES SLIDES OF MATING ANIMALS: Zoo Boise, and amorous animals, will provide a romantic setting for a Valentine's Day event Saturday. The Friends of Zoo Boise will hold the fourth annual "Wild Romance" event as a fund-raiser for educational programs at the zoo. "It's kind of a unique way to celebrate Valentine's Day," said Debbie Snyder, Friends of Zoo Boise program manager. To keep the event intimate, only 36 people can attend, at a cost of $15 per person. For that, each person will get a champagne brunch and a slide show showing mating rituals of zoo animals. And there's a guided tour of the zoo, during which attendees can observe courtship behavior of several animals. One possibility: peafowl. The males, peacocks, develop long colorful tail and back feathers to aid in breeding, said Rena Ashton, Friends' educational director. The showy feathers can be spread like a fan to attract females, she said. The females, peahens, in turn want to chose the best-looking male. If he looks good and healthy, that's an indicator he will find food and defend territory, and pass those qualities on to the young, she said. Attendees also will have a chance to win prizes, including dinner for two at the Bardenay Restaurant and a night at the Anniversary Inn Boise. |
