As to your proposal that government be reduced and only do what is essential, I would ask you the same same question that I asked DMA when he made a similar proposal. Which of the following meets your test for appropriate federal expenditures:

Maintaining the national interstate highway system.
Maintaining our air traffic control system.
Local mass transit.
Research to find a cure for cancer.
Research to find a cure for AIDS.
Guaranteed student loans.
Small business loans.
Disaster aid for hurricane damage in South Carolina.
The Coast Guard.
The US Marshall Service.
The Veterans Administration.
The federal court system.
Construction of the Hoover Dam (or a new one like it).
A marine base in Georgia.
A marine base in California.
Troops in Bosnia.
Troops in South Korea.
Star wars.
NASA.
The FDA
The FBI
The FCC
The DEA
The SEC
