Intel To Provide Linux Lab
In a clear break of the tacit Intel/Microsoft alliance, Intel is helping provide a $24 million Open Source Development Lab where struggling developers may gain access to enterprise class Intel hardware.
The 11,000-square-foot facility will be located west of Portland, Ore., and will be used to encourage the development of software to run under the Linux operating system on powerful servers in business environments, the same target as Microsoft has targeted for its Windows 2000 Server, Advanced Server and Data Center systems.
In addition to Intel, Caldera, Computer Associates, Dell Computer, Fujitsu, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Linuxcare, Red Hat, SGI, SuSE, TurboLinux, VA Linux Systems joined in supporting the OSDL. In addition, Covalent, Hitachi, LynuxWorks, Miracle Linux, Mitsubishi and NEC are supporters of the project.
