Thure- I have the same problem with Java as I have with Linux. The developers seem to go out of their way to make it incomprehensible to me. That's Microsoft's strongest points. Its software may be weak and expensive but you can usually open the box and get down to work in a reasonable amount of time.

I put a bid in on a Linux computer on eBay:

It's too bad it has to have a lot of expensive gear to drive the prices up. I'd be just as content with a P90 and a 1 gig drive as long as I had a working model in front of me.

I've become a recent AMD convert. That's part of my renewed interest in Linux. You get so much power from AMD for so little it makes sense to look into doing the same thing with software.

All of my development efforts are going with standard formats (HTML, SQL) so the end product should work as well in a neutral operating environment. Doing it though is a different story. So far I resurrected NT Server 3.51, Netscape Fasttrack Server 2.0 and Microsoft SQL Server 6.0. They are doing a capable job. SQL Server 6.0 is slow compared to the SQL2000 trial that comes in the Visual Studio.net beta but I own it and it only cost $50.

Fasttrack is quite capable now that I got a book to go with the CD.

That's one of the benefits of all the upgrading that goes on: the old stuff still works well.

Open source would be better but it would help if someone was working on shortening the learning curve.
