A MUST READ

Stock Shares Cost Value Percentage Gain
A 100 100 300 200.0
B 100 100 100 0.0
C 100 100 101 1.0
D 100 100 100 0.0
E 100 100 50 -50.0
TOTAL 500 500 651 30.2

Stock Shares Cost Value Percentage Gain
A 100 100 300 200.0
B 100 100 100 0.0
C 100 100 101 1.0
D 100 100 100 0.0
Z 100 10 5 -50.0
TOTAL 500 410 606 47.8

The above illustrates a flaw in the SI portfolio stock
picking challenge. If you add up the total percentage gain
of the above two portfolios each will be a 151% total gain,
but the way the SI portfolio calculates the total gain
percentage you will get two different percentages as shown
above of 30.2% and 47.8%. If you want a fair contest based
on each contest buying 100 shares of different companies
then you must calculate the winner by adding together each
percentage gain on each individual stock.

To further explain, the above two portfolios performed
exactly the same they are equal, but SI says one did better
than the other because SI is based on the amount of money
not the amount of shares. This contest was started based
on amount of shares not money.
