URUGUAY Y FEDERAL EXPRESS FIRMAN CONVENIO.

URUGUAY'S POSTAL SERVICE SIGNS DEAL WITH FEDERAL EXPRESS

Montevideo, Feb 09, 2001 (EFE via COMTEX) -- Uruguay's National Postal
Administration (NPA) signed an agreement Friday with Federal Express (FedEx) to
distribute part of the country's overseas mail.

"The agreement means less time and more certainty for deliveries, and it is part
of our modernization of the postal service," NPA head Carlos Rocca told EFE.

Federal Express operates in more than 200 countries, "and with this agreement,
our certified mail will reach the United States in 24 hours, Europe in 48 hours,
and the rest of the world in just a little more," he added.

Mail delivery "can be checked by users through a barcode system, lending greater
security and a better image to the postal service," Rocca remarked.

For its part, the NPA will distribute letters and small packages sent to Uruguay
via FedEx.

The agreement excludes Uruguay's Mercosur partners, Argentina, Brazil, and
Paraguay, as also regional associates Bolivia and Chile, "because with them we
already have our own highly effective system in operation," the NPA executive
noted. EFE
