DS, My background is financial. I can't though stress enough how important it is for investors to learn basic financial statement analysis. Knowing a product is very important. Your company could have the best new cutting edge technology widget around. That doesn't mean the business will necessarily be well run and hence a good investment. The only way to really "kick the tires" of a potential investment IMO is looking at their financials and there product/service. It's not an either/or situation, but part of completing your due diligence.
