Is the quality of the phone line in your house an issue? I know if you run the cheap beige 4-wire telco line, you get a lot of crosstalk/noise since the pairs aren't twisted sufficiently. I ran both the beige wire for voice and 4 pair cat 5 cable for PC networking throughout my house when it was rough-framed. Should never have used that lousy beige wire.

In my area, we were under Adelphia Cablevision until Comcast took them over a few weeks ago. But I can barely get a decent cable signal - how are they going to get me broadband through all that signal noise? They even sent one of their engineers to diagnose the problem. They seem to be doing their best with an aging cable infrastructure. Others I know of who have Adelphia Powerlink tell me because you have to share the bandwidth, your connection speed depends on the number of users on the system at the same time. So around 5 PM, when many want to come home and surf the net, the system bogs down. Perhaps the problem is lack of investment in upgrading equipment or lines. But I don't see myself getting access to cable modems where I am anytime soon. Perhaps DSL will be the best possibility for broadband in my area.
