What was the Datek incident?

Do you remember the swatch of purple that appeared on the original interface (as opposed to the "quisling" approximation of the original SI interface). The incident was the first "advert" for members. Compared to banner ads it was nothing, just the beginning of the end or maybe the end of the beginning. Who knows.
