Well, that is assuming it is Nebraska. If the writer can't tell the difference between a pony and a horse (depending on whether the creature is above or below 14 1/2 hands in height), then maybe they don't know the difference between Kenya and Nebraska.

And ponies are more hardy to severe weather than horses so your other argument does not stand up.

Thirdly, the British invented the Zebra (along with most other things including America) so we get to decide how to pronounce Zebra. If we wanted to pronounce it Zeebra we would have spelt it Zeebra, but we didn't and it's our word so if you want to pronounce it different, invent your own animal.

And anyway, Wildfire is the name of the bird inside my mobile fone that takes messages and tries to do speech recognition.
