Hi Mark - I am not technical enough to understand the detail, but the face value of the PR seems to suggest the target the GaAs players, not the VCO players. More important, there are 2 points people may want to take into considerations. What is in the lab may or may not be a viable solution in the real world. To say the least, there is a host of production logistical issues to be resolved. While I ve still a lot of respect for the Bell Lab unit of LU, being someone who has followed the FO developments, its production capability should be viewd with skepticism. It almost killed CIEN by preannouncing its 80 channel DWDM development. Also, its Lambda Router is very very late! Second, I thought technology providers use GaAs solutions b/c of their speed characteristics, even though they are more costly than silicon solutions.
