Harvey,

Try to get a lot of RAM when you buy the Linux computer. "Modern" window managers and applications chew
up a lot and they are not necessarily built in such a way that a compact working set (pages) allow you to
run your applications. In other words, its pretty easy to get a computer to thrash with less that 32 mb.

I agree that things are overly complex and getting more so. A good example is multi-media, where we have
a proliferation of formats. Another area is in the domain of networking where, if you look under the hood, you
will find that the Internet has morphed into an almost incomprehensibly dense space in both the connectivity
and protocol sense. A good site to look at that is caida.org. Check out the Walrus Tool images.

The big plus though, is that the open source tools are the best! And the support is the best. I love having the
smartest software engineers, scientists and clever hackers all working to solve application problems for free.
