In a recesion /soft landing, the Market leaders are entitled to a P/E of 1.5* the average of the S&P

Many earnings numbers I see are skewed by interesting accounting methods, especially the whole business of tech stocks and stock option compensation.

I don't have the experience to know how it was in the "old" days: has there always been some kind of gimmick to allow earnings to appear better than they are, or should we be discounting current earnings reports when doing historical P/E comparisons?
