oversold bounce

Ok, I admit it, I have no idea what 'oversold' means.

I see people use the term all the time but its really unclear to me what they mean through their use of the term and how people might use such concepts.

- oversold based on some sort of indicator ?
- percentage basis ?
- gut feel ?

Does it matter if the stock or market is in an uptrend? downtrend? range bound?

Just looking to spur some discussion on this topic, perhaps I'm not the only one confused or with differing ideas on this.
