Gus, it's 2001, don't be a "block-head". NTAP is selling "filers" that are use in database functions that were, previously, only used by direct attached storage. Did you hear the part in the conference call about Oracle standardizing on NTAP's filers for their database ASP business? Isn't Oracle a big EMC customer and don't you think EMC bid hard on that project but lost anyway?
NTAP has supported database among other traditional "block" applications for a long time. They are slowly getting people to realize that it isn't "block" vrs. "file", it's that they can do faster, cheaper and better.
As to 20% of the universe of functions: NTAP says the UNIX/NT storage market is a $25B market - that *is* the market they are going after, block, file, text, video or audio, they want to store it all. |
