But those NCs from IBM are not running Java.
If those are the NCs from NCDI they run ACTware as the O/S.

Gant says there are three reasons customers are buying these NCs:
One-third of the installations are to replace dumb terminals, one-third are installed to replace full-function PCs to lower total cost of ownership, and one-third are for new applications or first-time buyers.

Those NCs are not doing anything fancy just replacing dumb terminals
that process transactions.
