Micron Fixes, Resumes Shipping Athlon-Based PC

Micron Electronics Inc. has solved the noise problem which delayed some of its Athlon-based Micron Millennia Max XP PCs by up to 98 days, the company is expected to announce Monday. A spokesman for Micron (stock:MUEI), Nampa, Idano, said a significant number of Millennia Max XP's had already shipped, and that the company was expected to resume volume shipments on Monday as planned. The glitch, reported by TechWeb News in November, only affected a particular model of the Millennia XP. That PC, which uses the Athlon microprocessor designed by Advanced Micro Devices Inc.(stock: AMD), Sunnyvale, Calif., includes the option to run the AMD-760 chipset at either 200-MHz or 266-MHz. In testing, the company found that some Millennia Max XPs experienced electrical noise issues, but only in the motherboards of the PCs that used the 266-MHz bus option. The glitches were discovered before any PCs were shipped, the company spokesman said. The new Millennia Max XPs include a redesigned motherboard that has been fixed and tested with the faster bus speed, he said. At the time the noise issues were discovered, the company said it would resume shipments on Feb. 12. Lead times on the Millennia Max XP will remain at 30 days while the company works through its on-hand inventory, the spokesman said. By early March, Micron and its direct-sales site, micronpc.com, hope to reduce lead times to a "standard" seven days, the spokesman said.
