MR = Magnetive Resistance head. Head design disk drive industry is transitioning into.

KM = Keepered Media. Took a while to figure out this one too. At first I thought everybody had also recently made a profit on K-Mart. I thought they were pretty savy but wondered what K-Mart had to do with Ampex.

Keepered Media is a technology Ampex has developed which improves capacity of any magnetic (not sure of spelling) media. It is a coating which dampens the magnetic field of the disk tracks so that the field does not affect the recording on adjacent tracks and sectors. A bias voltage from the head turns this effect on and off to allow the head to read or write to the magnetic surface under the KM layer. Speculation is that Ampex will gain about $0.50 per hard drive platter sold. With an average of 3 platters per disk and a total of at least 800 million or so hard drives a 10% penatration would bring about 120 million to Ampex next year! Maxtor may sell KM hard drives this fall and could bring a million or so this year.
