<< The Yugoslav government is ready to co-operate with the
international war crimes tribunal on getting former President Slobodan Milosevic
extradited to The Hague, Yugoslav Justice Minister Momcilo Grubac said Monday.
Grubac told the Hungarian state-run news agency MTI that Yugoslavia was
prepared to co-operate with the court in The Hague, but added that some Yugoslav
laws need to be amended first.
He expressed the hope that in four or five months a separate law would be
passed that would allow Milosevic's extradition.
Faced with U.S. and other international pressure to extradite Milosevic,
Yugoslavia's pro-democracy officials are mulling sending the former president to
The Hague.
The U.S. has told the Yugoslav leadership that it must start co-operating with
the tribunal by March 31 or risk losing some $100 million in promised financial
aid.
However, many officials remain opposed to the idea, arguing that a trial in
The Hague could turn Milosevic into a hero and a martyr.
Grubac met with his Hungarian counterpart Ibolya David, who said Hungary would
help Yugoslavia prepare for European Union accession. >>
