Network Appliance announces products, SAP partnership

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2001 1:35:00 PM EST
SAN FRANCISCO, Feb 12 (Reuters) - Computer data storage maker Network Appliance Inc. NTAP on Monday announced better connectivity to networks using the high-end fibre channel protocol, a partnership with Germany's SAP AG SAPG and new products.

It also introduced a low-end storage unit and midrange products, as well as better support for Microsoft Windows operating system.

The new F85 unit drops the bottom end of the product range to compete with storage sold by computer makers like Compaq Computer Corp.CPQ, Network Appliance said in a statement.

It also released a mid-range caching unit, the NetCache C3100, which is designed to improve the flow of streaming video and other data at the edges of a large networks by creating data buffers close to users.

The SAP Global Technology Partnership improves Network Appliance's ability to market to major businesses building e-business solutions on the mySAP.com platform, while full fibre channel fabric support improves the ability to work with components made by other companies, Senior Vice President for Marketing Mark Santora told Reuters by telephone.

Network Appliance's single-purpose storage boxes improve network flows by reducing data management responsibilities on network servers and are relatively simple solutions often seen fit for dot-coms.

Network Appliance also announced mid-range storage file servers, or filers, the F820 and F820c, which hold up to three and six terabytes of data.
